Find Your Best Work — Creatively!

Category: AfterCapture & Rangefinder Articles, Creative Process, Workflow & DAMEthan G. Salwen @ 9:22 am

ACMF_080626_1Digital imaging offers us all kinds of tools to find our best work. But many photographers still find it difficult to assess their work on screen. Fine art photographer John Paul Caponigro offers some creative ways to go about it.

In “Finding Your Best Work” for his “Illuminating Creativity” column for the December/January 2008 AfterCapture, Caponigro offered some great insights and strategies for how to use Adobe Bridge and Lightroom to approach the creative process of editing in a digital environment.

Although Caponigro’s suggestions might seem fairly obvious after reading them, I think that many photographers will appreciate Continue reading “Find Your Best Work — Creatively!”

What Drove YOU To Become a Photographer?

Category: Creative Process, Photographers, ViewpointEthan G. Salwen @ 7:26 am

ACMF_080622_1Why are you a professional photographer? What drove you to pick up a camera and keep it picked up? I interview a lot of photographers and this question is always foremost in my mind. The answers are as interesting and varied as the photographers. I bet the same goes for you.

I find it interesting that most photographers don’t have an easy, quick answer. Few photographers were driven to make images from a young age, and the paths they took to arrive in the world of professional image making seem to have a deep impact on the images they make.

Magnum Photos Offers Motion Inspiration

Category: Creative ProcessEthan G. Salwen @ 7:19 am

080618_1I touched on the topic of photographers moving into the realm of motion. It is an amazing topic and some argue that it is THE issue facing still photographers in the coming years. Without getting into that debate, let’s take a look at Magnum Photos and see how they are embracing motion with gusto.

Head to Magnum’s homepage and you can’t help but notice a little motion right off. The largest display panel is reserved for a flash animated slideshow. Nothing overtly spectacular there. However most of the featured links whisk viewers off to more slideshows, and seeing the collection in live motion is captivating.

Photographers Move Into Motion

Category: Multimedia & Video, PhotographersEthan G. Salwen @ 10:17 pm

ACMF_080614_Motion1_1_MooneyStill image and video production are increasingly crossing over, and photographers are offering motion services to eager clients—from Flash-driven online slideshows to editing still images into simple or complex movie “shorts.” (Kind of like the audiovisual shows of yesteryear on speed.) Providing motion services is a sure way to expand and market services while offering wonderful creative satisfaction.

The business and creative aspects of moving into motion are complex. Let’s not get sidetracked by those right now, but look at three exciting examples of photographers in motion:

Gail Mooney is an editorial and commercial photographer who has photographed around the world for scores of magazines. “I see myself as a storyteller, and sometimes the story is best told in motion,” Mooney told me of her reasons for getting into movie making even before digital hit town. Mooney’s trailer to her “The Delta Bluesman” will give you an idea of her movie-making prowess.

Digital Photography Review’s Glossary Kicks Butt!

Category: Online Resources, Technology InsightsEthan G. Salwen @ 8:29 am

ACMF_080610_Glossary_1_DPRpng“It’s the little things.” This line from the movie Galaxy Quest—said with warm fondness—sums up my reaction to the Glossary page found on the Digital Photography Review website. Lot’s of terms. Good definitions. Way cool graphics.

Just as writers need dictionaries and thesauruses, image makers need good resources for the terms related to the evolving art and science of electronic imaging. This is especially true because new terms arise, old ones change, and some are just so darn confusing that we need to read different definitions from different sources.

While the chances are good you know exactly what a histogram is, maybe you could use a little clarification on the differences among “Pixels,” “Pixel Density,” and

Younger and Younger Every Year

Category: AfterCapture & Rangefinder Articles, Photographers, ViewpointEthan G. Salwen @ 7:04 am

ACMF_080605_Younger_DOU_1The standard “old fashioned” way of “making it” in professional photography—involving a lot of assisting, long-distance networking and a fair dose of luck—seems like Sisyphean nightmare from hell compared to the avenues available to today’s enterprising young photographers.

Fine art photographer Victoria Bjorklunk picked up a camera (digital) only a few years ago and she is already having great professional success with frequent exhibitions. And Bjorklund is certainly an impressive master of her specialty—B&W digital photography. She made this clear while providing expert guidance for my article “Going Black & White—The Easy Way” for the December/January 2008 issue of AfterCapture.

Oleg DOU is a Russian fine art photographer who proves that age is no obstacle to rapid international success. At only 25 the self-taught DOU has already won the Photographer of the Year award in the Continue reading “Younger and Younger Every Year”

The Awesome Power of Lightroom Presets

ACMF_080602_Lightroom_Presets_AWhile researching my latest column for the June/July 2008 issue of AfterCapture, I got a delicious taste of the truly amazing power of Lightroom presets. These wonderful workflow tools have the potential to not only seriously speed up workflow but also add new levels of creative freedom to image making.

To research “Ready. Preset. Wow!: The Awesome RAW Processing Power of Lightroom Presets” I worked with Argentine fashion photographer Tommy Abad. In just a couple hours he showed me how to take the power of Lightroom presets to the next level.

At the core of Abad’s strategy is his creation of more than 50 highly specific presets, each affecting only one area of Continue reading “The Awesome Power of Lightroom Presets”
