Pick Up the Phone!

Category: Creative Process, ViewpointEthan G. Salwen @ 11:12 am

ACMF_NG_007For a recent article I wrote for the North American Nature Photographer’s Association (NANPA), I was charged with figuring out how both experienced pros and dedicated amateurs could “take more creative images.” The short answer:

Pick up the phone!

The more specific answer: Call experts of ever shape and size and talk to them about the things you are interested in photographing.

That might seem either obvious or irrelevant, but I would argue that it is neither.

You see, as I talked (on the phone) to a number of award-winning nature photographers, they all had different answers to my question about creatively. But one thing Continue reading “Pick Up the Phone!”

Auto Surf for Quick & Easy Blog Inspiration

Category: Business & Marketing, Creative Process, Online ResourcesEthan G. Salwen @ 11:08 am

ACMF_NG_001One of the best ways to get ideas and inspirations for your own blog – from design to content – is to regularly surf the Blogosphere, especially the far corners that don’t relate directly to your interests.

I give out this excellent and basic advice all the time but, um, I have to admit that I have a hard time doing it myself. After all, who wants to click around to sites that don’t interest them in terms of content? It’s kind of like reading a book just because I “should.” Doesn’t happen.

Enter Condron.us. Go there now! You’ll love what you see, and you won’t need to read the rest of this post. Continue reading “Auto Surf for Quick & Easy Blog Inspiration”

One Year (and a Half) in 40 Seconds

Category: Creative ProcessEthan G. Salwen @ 11:02 am

Have you seen Erik Solheim’sOne Year in 40 Seconds”? It’s likely, given that you’re an image-making nut and it has received more than 1,700,000 hits on YouTube. Wow!

If you haven’t, definitely check it out. Simple idea, but sweetly elegant.

Personally, I appreciate the fact that the view Solheim selected for his year-long image is rather, well, mundane. I mean, at first I found myself thinking, “Why not record something a little more intriguing?” You know, something that would better exaggerate the effects of the passage of time. Then I realize I was actually Continue reading “One Year (and a Half) in 40 Seconds”

Digital Story Tellers Converge at ZoneZero

Category: Creative Process, Online ResourcesEthan G. Salwen @ 10:58 am

ACMF_NG_006Are you familiar with ZoneZero? More than ten years old, this site was launched by the forward-thinking, community-minded documentary photographer Pedro Meyer? The site’s tagline of “from analog to digital” is enticing, but doesn’t convey how rewarding how rewarding ZoneZero can be.

ZoneZero has a decidedly editorial/digital focus, but with forums and a magazine and content pouring in from quality writers and photographers around the world, ZoneZero will likely be of great interest to photographers from any specialty. After all, we’re all telling stories in digital in one manner of speaking or another.

How about an article on miniaturization by the New York Times’ David Pouge? Maybe an engaging memoriam celebrating the life of Cornell Capa? Or perhaps you are more interested in fascinating, image-filled articles from the magazine. After all, you can read about Japanese Continue reading “Digital Story Tellers Converge at ZoneZero”

To Write or Type Workflow Strategies?

Category: Creative Process, Viewpoint, Workflow & DAMEthan G. Salwen @ 10:58 am

ACMF_NG_003On page 79 of Andy Beach’s “Real World Video Compression” I came across a little gem that applies to almost every aspect of digital photography: How to best record our evolving workflows.

The concept that I love is how Beach addresses the idea that there’s a difference between creating workflow guides in handwriting or by typing them in the computer. It’s a simple idea and I still wrestle with the idea myself (I do both) but I’ve never heard anyone address the difference, nor have I Continue reading “To Write or Type Workflow Strategies?”

Welcome to the New Paradigm!

Category: ViewpointEthan G. Salwen @ 9:49 am

ACMF_NG_005To welcome you to the New Year I am going to share an email exchange I recently had with photographer Ben Colman. I had met him working on an article a few months ago, and he was nice enough to ask me to join his LinkedIn network. A simple ping turned into me blathering on and on about the ever evolving new paradigms of media. Here’s what transpired:

Ben Colman:

I’d like to add you to my professional network on LinkedIn.

Ethan G. Salwen:

Great. I’m not really using LinkedIn to any great extent, but glad to be linked up with you.

Ben Colman:

I’m relatively new to LinkedIn and am not using it widely either. I think it Continue reading “Welcome to the New Paradigm!”
