Digital Story Tellers Converge at ZoneZero

Category: Creative Process, Online ResourcesEthan G. Salwen @ 10:58 am

ACMF_NG_006Are you familiar with ZoneZero? More than ten years old, this site was launched by the forward-thinking, community-minded documentary photographer Pedro Meyer? The site’s tagline of “from analog to digital” is enticing, but doesn’t convey how rewarding how rewarding ZoneZero can be.

ZoneZero has a decidedly editorial/digital focus, but with forums and a magazine and content pouring in from quality writers and photographers around the world, ZoneZero will likely be of great interest to photographers from any specialty. After all, we’re all telling stories in digital in one manner of speaking or another.

How about an article on miniaturization by the New York Times’ David Pouge? Maybe an engaging memoriam celebrating the life of Cornell Capa? Or perhaps you are more interested in fascinating, image-filled articles from the magazine. After all, you can read about Japanese Continue reading “Digital Story Tellers Converge at ZoneZero”

World Press Photo ‘08 and Postproduction in Photojournalism

Category: Creative Process, The Industry, ViewpointEthan G. Salwen @ 9:43 am

ACMF_081215_WordPress08A couple weeks ago I saw the traveling World Press Photo ’08 exhibit on display here in Buenos Aires. Journalistic photography has never been as so-called “objective” as the general public tends to think. From selective cropping to the so-called “hand of god” burning and dogging techniques used by traditional black and white newspaper shooters, photographers have been employing postproduction techniques to better tell their stories since long before the advent of digital. As photographers, we are well aware of this.

Still, seeing the images of World Press Photo ‘08 in person (which I normally see in book form) drove home for me an obvious point that I hadn’t quite appreciated: In the realm of photojournalism, Continue reading “World Press Photo ‘08 and Postproduction in Photojournalism”

What It Takes To Be a National Geographic Photographer

Category: Photographers, The IndustryEthan G. Salwen @ 11:33 am

ACMF_080911_Sartore_1“It’s a matter of life and death.”

That’s what Joel Sartore told me a few days ago when I asked him what gives him the motivation to keep on photographing for National Geographic—one the most difficult photographic careers to pursue, and certainly not the romantic job most non-photographers tend to think it is.

Sartore’s “life and death” comment referred to his intense drive to record and help save endangered species. “We are looking at losing fifty percent of the world’s amphibians in the next ten years,” Sartore explained. “That’s pretty scary. If it can happen other species, it can happen ours.”
