Find Critical Metadata Knowledge at PhotoMetadata.org

Category: Online Resources, Technology Insights, Workflow & DAM — Ethan G. Salwen @ 10:30 am

ACB_100111_1_Photometadata.orgToday I heard from David Riecks, one of the industry’s leading experts on metadata issues. He informed me that he is working to figure out how social media sites are handling photographic metadata. (Stripping out all, some or none.) Clearly this is a critical issue. To learn more, check out Riecks’s “Photometadata.org” blog post of December 3 on the topic:

“Do Social Media Websites Preserve Photo Metadata?”

ACB_100111_3_Photometadata.orgHearing from Riecks motivated me to check out at Photometadata.org, which was not up and running the last time I wrote extensively on metadata topics. I strongly suggest you take a quick look at this important resource site and note how it can help in your specific metadata learning curve.

Photometadata.org is a comprehensive, valuable online learning resource for both quick reference and deeper background learning and in includes how-to tutorials in PDF and video formats. Essential links are listed.

Back in May 2008, in this blog, I reported on some metadata fundamentals in Continue reading “Find Critical Metadata Knowledge at PhotoMetadata.org”

The Rockn’ Jobo PhotoGPS Recorder

Category: Technology Insights — Ethan G. Salwen @ 6:06 am

ACMF_NG_040Always sorting the best from the rest, digital photography guru Jay Kinghorn raves about the JOBO PhotoGPS in his latest “Professional Digital Workflow” newsletter. And it’s easy to see why. Imagine a tiny, sleek item locked into your hot shoe that gathers amazing amounts of GPS metadata related to each of your captures – boom!, no thought — including altitude. Beyond cool.

Kinghorn ran into the Jobo PhotoGPS at the Photo Marketing Show and reports in his newsletter:

“This [JOBO PhotoGPS] device can be a huge time-saver when embedding location information into your photos. This makes searching your image library more productive. In past issues, I featured compelling multimedia projects linking photographs to Continue reading “The Rockn’ Jobo PhotoGPS Recorder”

A Lightroom Keyword Lesson from Scott Kelby

Category: Photoshop & Lightroom, Workflow & DAM — Ethan G. Salwen @ 11:33 am

ACMF_080916_1If you’re using Lightroom and not using Keywords—or would like to learn a few, simple not-obvious tricks—check out Scott Kelby’s illustrated, online article on the topic. It’s reprinted from his book, The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Book for Digital Photographers, and it has the advantage of being, well, online. It’s also free, which is always nice. You can also enlarge the illustrations, which both useful and cool. Continue reading “A Lightroom Keyword Lesson from Scott Kelby”

The Big, Scary Metadata Crisis (And How To Address It)

Category: AfterCapture & Rangefinder Articles, Workflow & DAM — Ethan G. Salwen @ 10:11 am

ACMF_080518_1Actually, it would be more appropriate to call it a lack of metadata crisis, and it is—without any hyperbole—a deadly serious problem that is taking place in every corner of the professional photography landscape. It’s an unnerving nightmare that affects you and every other photographer. Unfortunately, few photographers seem to know about it. Luckily, there are very easy steps you can take to avoid being a metadata-less victim.

Obviously metadata is an extremely broad term, with all kinds of metadata for all types of uses. What I am referring to here is the most basic metadata that all photographers must add to their files: your name, your contact information and the copyright status of your image. (Ranking, keyword and processing instruction metadata are all cool, but not adding them results in workflow inefficiencies, not an industry-wide crisis.)
