How Colormetrically Advanced Is Your Browser?

Category: Online Resources, Technology Insights, Workflow & DAMEthan G. Salwen @ 8:24 am

ACMF_NG_063Actually, Jeffrey’s Friedl’s blog article called “Digital-Image Color Spaces” intelligently addresses a heck of a lot more about color spaces than just how your browser is handling the color of the images it displays. However, the monitor insight (complete with interactive learning examples) is particularly valuable – even for those with high color space IQs.

As far as I can tell, best color space practices in relation to monitors (e.g. all Web content!) is probably one of the least understood aspects of color management. (I’m still a bit confused.) And arguably, it is the most important aspects of color management to understand. After all, except for the handful of photographers on the planet who don’t know what a computer is, the Web is the single most common media in which their work will be viewed – including critical proof and gallery evaluations by clients and samples for intended clients. Given this, we want to be on top of color issues in relation to monitors. Continue reading “How Colormetrically Advanced Is Your Browser?”

DxO Strikes Again. More RAW Sensor Data!

ACMF_NG_061“Paris, France – May 14, 2009 – DxO Labs announces today the publication of detailed RAW-based image quality data and DxOMark Sensor rankings on its popular www.dxomark.com website for two additional medium-format cameras, the Phase One P65+ and the Hasselblad H3DII 50.”

This is from a press release released today by DxO Labs, the French software developer that has put non-biased raw sensor data directly into the hands of us “regular ole photographers” (my language, not theirs). The press release is not that exciting, but the site is really cool site, and using it is free. No need to even sign in. (Phew.) Continue reading “DxO Strikes Again. More RAW Sensor Data!”

Photoshop Disasters is Fun and Educational

Category: Photoshop & LightroomEthan G. Salwen @ 7:28 am

ACMF_NG_053“We all look at photoshopdisasters.com,” New York-based still life photographer Nicholas Eveleigh told me during a recent interview. He was referring over reliance on postproduction to try to correct the uncorrectable. “One can make some REALLY nice images without Photoshop,” said Eveleigh, who tries to get it right in-camera.

I said, “Yes” when Eveleigh mentioned Photoshop Disasters, as if EVERYONE knows about it. And according to the site, 30,000 photographers head there each day, indicating that, um, just about everyone on the planet is in the know. But, um, I wasn’t. Get Smart at Retouched.net

Category: Creative Process, Online Resources, Photoshop & LightroomEthan G. Salwen @ 7:07 am

ACMF_NG_050Speaking of retouching, have you visited Retouched.net? It’s a great resource for learning about retouching — arguably the final frontier for most digital photographers — as well as many aspects of digital photography in general.

Retouched.net features article, columns, and video tutorials. The site also features lots of ads, links and clutter that can make it a bit overwhelming. But if you get past the overwhelm, you’ll find gobs of timely and helpful content about postproduction.

Particularly nice is that Retouched.net features artist profiles, whose insights help us think about retouching more as an art and less a set of Photoshop techniques.

Still, wouldn’t it be nice if there were one place we could go to find all the answers to all our digital imaging questions? Well there is. It’s a wonderful place called UPDIG.
