Pulitzer Prize-Winner Brings Us Despair and Motivation

Category: Multimedia & Video, PhotographersEthan G. Salwen @ 8:29 am

ACMF_NG_066Patrick Farrell, a photojournalist for “The Miami Herald,” recently won a Pulitzer Prize in the category breaking news photography. As the prize citation explains, this was for “his provocative, impeccably composed images of despair after Hurricane Ike and other lethal storms caused a humanitarian disaster in Haiti.”

“A People in Despair: Haiti’s year without mercy” is a multimedia piece produced by the “Miami Herald” and hosted on their site. It combines Farrell’s incredible black-and-white images with his personal, moving voice-over. It is just over two minutes in length. In this brief time, it is impossible Continue reading “Pulitzer Prize-Winner Brings Us Despair and Motivation”

A Wonderful Selection of Natural Selection Images

Category: Multimedia & VideoEthan G. Salwen @ 5:59 am

ACMF_NG_039Today the BBC posted a wonderful audio slideshow called “The art of camouflage.” Check it out! You will see a spectacular series of nature images tied together with a very specific theme complete with concise, engaging education narration.
As the introductory text says, “Appearance, it seems, is key to survival in the animal kingdom – with some species able to blend in perfectly with their surroundings, while others behave quite the contrary. Take a look with Professor Innes Cuthill from the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Bristol.”

The images are truly spectacular, covering a vast array of Continue reading “A Wonderful Selection of Natural Selection Images”

On The Slushy Streets of NYC — In Motion

Category: Creative Process, Multimedia & Video, PhotographersEthan G. Salwen @ 11:20 am

ACMF_NG_009New York Times photographer Bill Cunningham is an excellent fashion/street image-maker with a insightful sense of humor, and he shows how powerful simple, still-image-based motion pieces can be with his, “On the Street: The Water Dance.”

Besides enjoying Cunningham’s images in his three minutes of silly insight into a New Yew winter “tradition” – the “jumping game” — you can really appreciate the simple new media power of this piece. It’s just still images smartly put together with a voiceover, but it’s a great attention grabber.

No need to capture motion, write a story, add music or use fancy graphics!

Can’t you see how you could put this to use for wedding clients or promotional efforts? Maybe you already have. If so, share your story!

Magnum Photos Offers Motion Inspiration

Category: Creative ProcessEthan G. Salwen @ 7:19 am

080618_1I touched on the topic of photographers moving into the realm of motion. It is an amazing topic and some argue that it is THE issue facing still photographers in the coming years. Without getting into that debate, let’s take a look at Magnum Photos and see how they are embracing motion with gusto.

Head to Magnum’s homepage and you can’t help but notice a little motion right off. The largest display panel is reserved for a flash animated slideshow. Nothing overtly spectacular there. However most of the featured links whisk viewers off to more slideshows, and seeing the collection in live motion is captivating.

Photographers Move Into Motion

Category: Multimedia & Video, PhotographersEthan G. Salwen @ 10:17 pm

ACMF_080614_Motion1_1_MooneyStill image and video production are increasingly crossing over, and photographers are offering motion services to eager clients—from Flash-driven online slideshows to editing still images into simple or complex movie “shorts.” (Kind of like the audiovisual shows of yesteryear on speed.) Providing motion services is a sure way to expand and market services while offering wonderful creative satisfaction.

The business and creative aspects of moving into motion are complex. Let’s not get sidetracked by those right now, but look at three exciting examples of photographers in motion:

Gail Mooney is an editorial and commercial photographer who has photographed around the world for scores of magazines. “I see myself as a storyteller, and sometimes the story is best told in motion,” Mooney told me of her reasons for getting into movie making even before digital hit town. Mooney’s trailer to her “The Delta Bluesman” will give you an idea of her movie-making prowess.
