Vimeo Bests YouTube on Sound Quality

Category: Multimedia & Video, Technology InsightsEthan G. Salwen @ 1:24 pm

Working to improve my basic editing skills using royalty-free music, I came up with “Train to Palermo — The Zebras Version” — sharing my ride in Buenos Aires from Villa del Parque (home) to Palermo (tourist haven). To see how Vimeo bests YouTube when it comes to sound quality, watch the first 10 seconds of these two versions and concentrate on listening.

To each site I uploaded the exact same video file and as you can hear, the sound comes out a lot better on the file hosted by Vimeo. (By “better” I mean “not muffled” and “sounds like the original when played on my computer.”) This is something to keep in mind when deciding whether YouTube or Vimeo is better for sharing your video projects.

YouTube Vs. Vimeo for Hosting Videos

Category: Multimedia & Video, Technology InsightsEthan G. Salwen @ 2:53 pm

AfterCapture Blog_100518_YouTube_Vimeo_1In my last post, I made it clear that the YouTube community can be a toxic one. I also suggested that this might be a reason for preferring to host videos on Vimeo.com rather than YouTube.com. However, I want to make it clear that YouTube is really no better or worse for hosting videos than Vimeo. For more technical specifics than I cover on the differences between YouTube and Vimeo, check out Dan Sung’s “Vimeo vs YouTube – which is the better video service?”

YouTube for Going Viral

Yesterday the BBC News reported that YouTube, as it turns five-years-old, is receiving two billion hits a day. “If you tag your videos really well, YouTube can bring you new viewers,” says Eric Cheng, the underwater photographer who mentioned to me the toxic nature of the YouTube community.

If you care about new-era marketing, you simply must watch this Super Wow photographer promotion. It’s only costs 1.48 minutes of YouTube Time, and it’s guaranteed to make you rethink your creative marketing efforts. It ingeniously, wittily highlights the photographer James Burger, and it was brought to my attention by Beate Chelette.

I  hate to post “must-watch” mandates, but this promotional video really will knock your socks off.

As Chelette says of the piece Continue reading “Major WOW Promotional Video!”

Everything’s Amazing, Are Photographers Happier?

Category: ViewpointEthan G. Salwen @ 12:28 pm

ACMF_NG_023Go figure. In the past two months three photographers have shared with me this same video on YouTube featuring the hilarious comedian Louis CK. Check it out for a good laugh, even though it doesn’t seem to have anything to do with photography.

Louis CK always makes me laugh with his dead-on witty observations about the absurdities of society. As you will see in this piece, he points out how technology is giving us incredible wonders – WiFi in planes!!! – but everyone is bitching – the damn WiFi went out!!!

How does this relate to photography? I’m not exactly sure, but I’m thinking you might be able to chime in. After three photographers forwarded me this same video (for no clear reason), it got me to thinking about Continue reading “Everything’s Amazing, Are Photographers Happier?”
